Thought after the keynote

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing(say that job title fast 10 times!), delivered the opening keynote for this year’s Macworld Conference & Expo about an hour ago. Schiller was going to talk about 3 new things today…

iLife09
Apple
The first new thing was iLife 09 and he talked about it for 50 minutes or so. As a pro user that is 50 minutes Ill never get back…

The new stuff in iPhoto is face recognition, geo tagging/manuel place inut, themed slideshows, facebook/flickr integration, a couple more adjustments in the editing and a new automated future form maps if you order books with iPhoto.

iMovie 09 had a huge upgrade compared to the 2008 version. When the 2008 version arrived Apple had to ofer the old version of iMovie since the 2008 version was stripped off futures. The new stuff is advance drag/dropping (read lapping one video over another, yay!) of video to the timeline, more control on the edit, themes are back together with a animated maps future, video stabilization, title and transition effects and a new way to show your library.

I have never used garageband and I don’t think I will with the 09 version either. The new futures are build in lessons, a way to buy music lessons from famous musicians, guitar future and a update to magic garageband.

It looks like iWeb stays more or less the same as the previous version with the addition of facebook integration and the ability to add widget.

iWork09
Apple
The second thing Phil talked about was iWork, another product I don’t care that much about..

To me the remote control of keynote through iPhone is the most interesting new future in Keynote. In addition to that they added a new future they call magic move, a theme chooser, more themes, chart animation, and the ability to export to PDF and PowerPoint.

Numbers got more advance options, new ways to organize the charts, updated Excel export and enhancements to the way you input and view formulas.

What I like about the Pages upgrade is the new full screen view, what it does is that it hides everything but the document you are working on. Pages got a new theme chooser just like Keynote, MathType 6 and EndNote X2 integration, dynamic outline of ducuments/project and more ways to share the document in Word format.

MBP17" - Jan 2009
Apple
New 17″ version of the MacBook Pro. The new version has a few pros and one huge con as I see it.

Pros

  • Beautiful design
  • Unibody
  • green
  • updated gfx
  • option to get antiglare display
  • 8GB memory as max
  • Mini Display Port

cons

  • not able to change the battery
  • not able to upgrade the memory yourself
  • add at least a mini display port - DVI adapter
  • where is the quad core?

One more thing…
Update to iTunes. Every song will become available in iTunes Plus format, this means that the music will be DRM free (finally) and coded in better quality. This comes at a price tho, at least for the US citizens, they have to pay from 69 cents to $1.29 for each track. After a fast search in the Norwegian iTunes store it looks like all the tunes will be available at the previous price, 8kr. You can now buy songs over both Wifi and 3G with your iPhone(nothing was said if the data usage on 3G was included).

Before the storm - macworld

Tonight (CET) is the last Macworld Apple is going to attend. The Onion News Network have the inside scoop of what Apple is going to release.

Now that Steve’s health problem is out in the open I have the following predictions of what is going to happen.

  • Updated iMac
  • New Mac Mini
  • New MBP 17″
  • White MB is gone, new lower price on the unibody models
  • Nehalem based Mac Pro
  • New Cinema Displays with Mini Display port
  • 2009 version of iLife/iWork
  • Preview of Snow Leopard - Release later this spring
  • iPhone with 32GB memory

The NRK and TONO deal

NRK
Build upon NRK and NGDS/NOAA/DMSP/Tor Øra

NRK - Norwegian Broadcaster and the Norwegian version of RIAA - TONO has come to a new agreement of how the broadcaster will pay for usage of music in their shows. The agreement include details on how the broadcaster can distribute the shows to the Norwegian public through internet.

NRKbeta - TONO

I did not think more of it than, ok they got a new deal at the time. Yesterday tho, NRKbeta (NRKs sandbox for technology and new media) published a article about their radio program “Vår daglige Beatles”:

In this series from 2001, journalists Finn Tokvam og Bård Ose tells the story of every single Beatles tracks ever made, chronologically. Each episode contains a 3 minute story about each track (sadly for our international visitors - in Norwegian) and the actual Beatles tune.

This is - as far as we know - the first time you can download the Beatles’ music legally. Neither iTunes nor Amazon have The Beatles in their music stores.

NRKbeta - Beatles

Since they already have published the podcast open to the world with instructions in English, I guess they don’t have any restriction to make it available to the Norwegian public only.

After reading that article a few questions popped up in my mind. First of all, what restriction do I have? Can I edit out the music for personal usage? If I can, will I be able to share howtos on my website / social services? If I can’t, NRK first of all have to inform the user about this, but how do they restrict it? A button that you agree on the restriction for every episode? each season? one time only?

This questions is specially important when you look forward on their future plans. If you follow their current guidelines it seems that you have legal access to a lot of music. The future of this will be very interesting to follow.

2009

First of all happy new year!

Content

The next on the list is to give you all a update on what has been and the future of this site. For the last year or so this blog have been more or less my personal blog and that will change in 2009. The biggest problem with this blog so far has been the long breaks with no updates at all. With the latest theme it has been a little more dynamic with the integration of social tools but this is not enough.

The focus of the blog will shift more over to what I know and have a passion about, media and technology. I will write a weekly column that includes a summary of what I have done that week plus interesting stuff that have happened that week.

Site

With the new year is a new version of my WP theme bumping it up to version 1.1b. The major update is ofc. adjustments for wp 2.7 and new versions of the plugins that is installed. For those of you browsing this site with Safari 3.1, Firefox 3.2 (currently a beta release) or Opera 10 (currently alpha released) you can see some enhancement to the site. This version of the theme is based on and (is suppose to) validates in XHTML 1.1 and CSS level 3(CR).

The theme is currently in beta testing(here) so please report any errors in the comments below.

Buglist:

  • Link to services in sidebar does not work yet. Waiting for a update of the plugin used.

Hong Kong in pictures

December

There has been some time since my last post so I figured it was about time to tell you all about what I have been doing in December.

Hong Kong

First off.. I arrived on Oslo December 2nd and was greated with 20cm snow at the airoort and about -5 degrees. I previusly said to my family that I was going to come home December 4th so they where up to a big surprice. I traveled with the train from the airport and back to my home town.

I knocked on the door to my mother’s apartment, and my youngest sister opened. She stopped to gape for a few seconds before she said my name. My mother was busy with something in a different room but was currious about who it was that arrived so she came out into the hall.

Over the next cople of weeks I more or less did nothing else than catching up with friends and family in addition to adjusting to the cold weather.

I celebrated christmas with my family eating loads of food, so now Im ready for the gym in January… On the last day on the year I joined up with Bjorn Rostad and Andreas Hatlem for their new years party.

After one month back in Norway I have come the the conclusion that I cant see any future for me here. I dont want to walk around freezing my ass off every time I go outside the appartment between september and may. So.. a return ticket will be ordered within january/february too try my luck down under.

Hong Kong

Me waiting for my flight at Hong Kong airport.

a few more words after the third tattoo session

My chest + full sleeve tattoo is now “done” (read bruised and swollen). The third and final session for now had focus on the chest and shoulder part. To quote myself..

They say that one image describe a thousand words, but not even 10 images is able to present this amazing awesome excellent extraordinary [put in the best word you can come up with] piece of art.

Brad Bako is just an amazing artist and if you ever are around Newcastle drop by his shop. If you don´t want a tattoo, at least drop by to get one of his paintings, skateboard design etc. If you want a tattoo he has a 2-3 months waiting list so give Fat Ink a call and they will set you up.

Back to the piece I got done… The chest part was the most painful so far, specially around the nipple.. hehe. But it all came together in the end and now I have one of Brads unique art parts on my body forever, and the thought of that is amazing. Brad felt really good about the piece himself when he was done, so it is all good :)

We started talking a little bit about the “next piece” tho… The next big thing I want on my body is a big and bright orange Koi fish. The Koi fish represent love and friendship in Japan and that is something I want to be represented on the left side of my back. It would ofc. have to be more of a biomech style but with a pretty traditional Koi fish in the front. I want a huge blue dragon as well on the right side of my back.. but yea… we will just have to see.. First I have to take it easy for a couple of days so the one I have now get the proper healing..

To all of you who have mailed and talked to me about pictures… they will get online after family and friends get the “on skin” impression. So I guess I will upload images in 2 weeks or so.
